Connector Selection for EV Platforms: What Has Changed

The transition to electric vehicle platforms has fundamentally changed the connector requirements of the automotive sector. Where conventional vehicles required low-voltage signal connectors in high volumes, EVs add a layer of high-voltage power connectors that must meet entirely different performance and safety criteria.

Voltage and Current Ratings

Modern EV battery systems operate at 400V or 800V depending on the platform. Connectors in these systems must be rated accordingly — and must maintain their ratings across temperature extremes, vibration, and repeated connection cycles. Current ratings are equally important. Fast-charging systems require connectors that can handle sustained high currents without thermal degradation.

IP and Safety Requirements

High-voltage connectors in EVs typically require IP67 or IP69K ratings, ensuring protection against water ingress in both static and dynamic conditions. Touch-proof design and interlock systems that prevent connection or disconnection under load are now standard expectations.

Evaluating Suppliers

When specifying connectors for EV applications, buyers should request full data sheets covering dielectric withstand voltage, contact resistance, and thermal performance. Third-party test certifications are increasingly required by OEM quality teams. Manufacturers like TE Connectivity offer dedicated EV connector product lines designed to meet these requirements.
